Outdoor Play

Every parent hopes for their child/ren to grow up healthy and strong. One of the easiest and most effective ways of supporting children's physical development is through engagement in outdoor activities. Outdoor play is not only fun for children but also an excellent way to support the development of their gross motor skills. Gross motor skills refer to the movement and coordination of the large muscles of the body, and they are essential for activities such as running, jumping, climbing, and playing sports. 

 

Outdoor activities you can do with your child/ren to support their gross motor development: 

 

  1. Play ball games such as soccer, basketball, and catch. These games help children develop their hand-eye coordination, throwing, catching, and running skills. 
  2. Set up an obstacle course with items such as cones, ropes, and hula hoops. This activity helps children develop their problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and coordination. 
  3. Take nature walks and encourage children to climb over rocks, walk on uneven terrain, and explore different textures and surfaces. This activity helps children develop their balance, coordination, and muscle strength. 
  4. Play games that involve running and jumping, such as tag, hide-and-seek, and hopscotch. These games help children develop their balance, coordination, and endurance.  
  5. Ride bikes or scooters together. This activity helps children develop their balance, coordination, and endurance. 
  6. Participate in outdoor group activities such as sports teams, dance classes, or martial arts classes. These activities provide a structured environment where children can learn new movements and techniques while having fun with their peers. Engagement in outdoor play and exploration is an excellent way to support children in their gross motor development and by allowing them the time and opportunities to engage in such play children will be able to strengthen the physical skills they need to thrive in life.
