The power of breath is an essential tool for calming and self-regulation in children. Intentional breathing helps them relax after experiencing big emotions or unwind at the end of a busy day. In Occupational Therapy sessions, breath work supports the connection between the mind and body, showing children how simple breathing patterns can influence their emotional and physical wellbeing.
Self-regulation refers to a child’s ability to manage their emotions and actions depending on what a situation requires. A child’s capacity for self-regulation is influenced by their cognitive, attentional and emotional development. It is very common for children to struggle with self-regulation because they are still developing the tools needed to cope with everyday challenges.
Below are several breathing games and activities that can support calming and regulation at home.

A bucket or bowl with a small amount of water

-
Give your child a chewy tube or straw and encourage them to blow into the mixture.

Hold the end of the balloon to keep the air inside until everyone is ready.
-
Release the balloon and watch it zoom around the room.
-
Retrieve the balloon and repeat the steps.
